Umbrellas with a silver lining offer a cooler light, while a white interior softens and weakens light more than an umbrella with a silver lining. The black backing helps in bouncing it's reflection. Your choice of umbrella size should be determined by the size of your subject, plus the strength of the light supply you are using.
